Every single night of the year, around 1,200 people sleep rough on hard benches and in grubby doorways on the streets of various English cities. Jasmine, twenty-two, is one of them. At first, huddled in a door entrance asking passers-by for money, she is reluctant to open up, but then she begins to talk. This is her story.
"I’ve been living on the streets ever since I was sixteen years old, when I ran away from my foster home. My parents died when I was very young so I went into foster care. It wasn’t so bad but I wanted to make it on my own. I stayed on friends’ couches at first, but eventually their parents grew tired of having me around, So, I caught a train to London, thinking that it would be easier to survive in the big city. How wrong could I be! I tried to find a job but no one would take me on without a fixed address. I slept in a cheap B & B for a few nights, but then my money ran out and I spent my first night in a sleeping bag on a park bench. I’ll never forget how alone I felt that night. I lay awake, terrified and shivering with cold.
Living rough, you sort of go back and forth between temporary accommodation and the street. I spend the odd night in a hostel for homeless people, and there are loads of squats around the city centre too. These are usually in abandoned houses, empty office buildings, disused warehouses, places like that. Usually you share a cramped little room with around fifteen others. Some of these people are drug addicts or alcoholics, and usually the room’s filthy and there’s no running water or electricity. But at least it’s a roof over your head, which can mean the difference between life or death when there are sub-zero temperatures outside. On the streets, the cold eats into your bones. I have my favourite doorways and I try to stick to busy, well-lit streets. Sometimes traffic fumes almost choke me, the noise is deafening and there’s no privacy whatsoever. But that’s a small price to pay for safety.
So how do I survive? Well, the government gives people like me money, but it’s barely enough to eat. I just about make ends meet by begging, selling The Big Issue. whatever I can really. I hate asking for money from people. Some take pity on me and toss me a few coins or buy me a sandwich or a hot drink. But most just rush past me and avoid looking me in the eye. They just want to get back to their posh houses in the suburbs, you know. Basically, you lose your identity, your dignity, everything, on the streets. It’s so boring not having a job, having nothing to do during the day, until one of the soup kitchens opens in the evening. It destroys your soul.
I don’t know what the future holds. Homelessness is a vicious circle that is very difficult to break out of. It’s very hard to get work, because no one takes you seriously, and then you lose your confidence and your self-esteem and it becomes even harder. I’m on a council waiting list for a flat though. I want nothing more than to have a place of my own one day. A place that I can call home."

Education in Britain is compulsory (обязательный) for all children between the ages of 5-16.
School-children attend a primary school for 6 years. When students transfer to Secondary School at the age of 11, they do not take any examination, but their reports are sent on from the Primary School.

Most schools have very good libraries which students use for reference work.

The night before their flight to Paris for the Christmas holiday, the McCallister family gathers at the Chicago suburb home of Peter and Kate McCallister. Their eight-year-old son Kevin is ridiculed by his siblings and cousins. After an argument with his older brother Buzz, Kevin is sent to the third floor of the house, where he wishes his family would disappear. During the night, a power outage resets the alarm clocks and causes the family to oversleep. In the confusion and rush to reach their flight on time, Kevin is left behind and the family does not realize it until they are already airborne. Once in Paris, Peter and Kate desperately try to book a flight home, but find all the flights booked for the next 2 days. The clerks put Kate on standby for any possible seat opening. The rest of the family go to their relative’s home in Paris.
Meanwhile, Kevin wakes up to find the house empty and is overjoyed with his new freedom. He practices shooting with Buzz’s BB gun, jumps on the bed, watches a gangster film, and eats a large serving of junk food, but accidentally wrecks Buzz’s room. The Chicago Police Department arrive to check on him but are unable to find him and consider his parents’ call a hoax. Kevin also deals with his fear of his next door neighbor "Old Man" Marley, who is rumored to have murdered his family many years earlier, and the The Wet Bandits, Harry and Marv, criminals named for Marv’s tendency to intentionally flood the homes they rob. The pair are robbing the area’s vacant homes and have targeted Kevin’s. Kevin keeps the pair at bay by tricking them into thinking the house is still inhabited, but they eventually realize Kevin is alone.
Kate gets a flight to the USA, but ends up in Pennsylvania. She tries to book a flight to Chicago but they are again all booked. Kate refuses to accept the situation, and she is overheard by Gus Polinski, the lead member of a traveling polka band, who offers to let her travel with them to Chicago on their way to Milwaukee. Kate happily accepts.
On Christmas Eve, Kevin overhears Harry and Marv discussing plans for breaking into his house that night. Kevin goes to church and watches a choir perform. Marley sits beside Kevin and the pair talk; he learns that Marley is actually a nice person and the rumors about him are false. He tells Kevin he is watching the choir because his granddaughter is in it, and he never gets to see her because he and his son have not spoken in years after they had an argument. Kevin advises him to reconcile with his son.
Kevin returns home and rigs the building with various booby traps. Harry and Marv break in, triggering various traps and suffering burns, impalement and a lost tooth. While the pair close in on Kevin, he calls the police and escapes the house into a neighboring vacant home. Harry and Marv manage to catch him and discuss how they will get their revenge. Marley sneaks up behind the pair and knocks them out with a snow shovel. Shortly after, Harry and Marv are arrested, and tied to the multiple other robberies because of Marv’s flooding habit.
On Christmas Day, Kevin is disappointed to find that his family is still gone. He then hears Kate enter the house and call for him; the pair hug. Immediately after, the rest of the McCallisters arrive, having flown directly from Paris to Chicago. Kevin keeps silent about his encounter with Harry and Marv, although Peter finds Harry’s missing gold tooth. Kevin and Buzz forgive each other for their earlier argument. Kevin then observes Marley reuniting with his son and his family. Marley notices Kevin and the pair acknowledge each other. Buzz suddenly calls out, "Kevin, what did you do to my room?", at which point Kevin runs off.

Our desire for happiness has helped develop a multi-million pound industry focused on pleasure. Despite this, many of us still seem to be unhappy! Psychologist Janet Wells seems to know exactly why. Here we uncover her secrets of how to actually achieve that missing happiness.
In the past, people rarely discussed whether they were happy or not and kept their feelings to themselves. Today though, magazine articles giving advice on the pursuit of happiness bombard us from all sides. It would appear that being unhappy is now generally unacceptable, especially where the younger generation is concerned. These days, it is that particular group that feels quite comfortable talking openly about happiness or a lack of it. They believe that a state of happiness equals success and that without success they are nothing.
It seems that people are more willing to try to react differently to life’s events. Janet is a fine example of this and has found that changing her outlook has brought her a certain amount of happiness. She began to understand that she had made her own life difficult because she tended to think or act in harmful ways. For example, never admitting that she was wrong because that would undoubtedly make her seem weak and vulnerable, or criticising herself endlessly, certain that she did not deserve success and happiness.
She was, at one point, a definite pessimist. She believed that if you expected little in life then you would be able to avoid disappointment. The turning point in her life was when the knowledge she gained through her studies allowed her to face up to the fact that it was possible to actually get rid of doubts and learn to be more contented with yourself and your life. This helped her to change many aspects of her life, including her outlook, her relationships and her choices.
Change, of course, brings uncertainty and uncertainty can create fear. Most of us tend to stay with what we know rather than choose any form of change. As a result, we continue to be unhappy. If we do decide to change things, however, we then begin a journey that only we can map out. We can, however, also learn from other people. According to Janet’s research, people can have similar upbringings yet have very different ideas and responses to the exact same events.
In support of these findings she quotes the ancient Greek philosopher Epictetus who said, "It is not things in themselves that trouble us, but our opinion of those things." So, we create our own translations of things that happen in life and those translations make us decide how we feel about an event and what we need to do about it. It is not always possible to change what happens to us, but we can always change how we translate what happens to us.
Janet herself has had to deal with moments of both happiness and unhappiness in her own personal life. She admits to not being able to actually help people to be happy, but stresses that if you can prevent unhappiness then you have a good chance of being a contented individual. She would like to help people achieve that level of contentment. Although it is something we each need to do for ourselves, as long as we really want to succeed, she believes we will be able to bring about change.
She would, however, like to advise people that happiness is not a goal but an emotional response to things that happen and that it is perfectly natural to feel sad at times. In order to help happiness develop and grow, we need to feel accepted by those around us and feel like valuable members of society.

It’s hard to explain my love for hockey. I’ve grown up with it and have played it since I was 5. I love it because of the fights, because it’s fast and the fact that it’s a sport my dad and I can share and play together. When playing, I just love skating down the rink and feeling the cool breeze. In a school team, I play right wing and fall over a lot, which means my knees are always covered in cuts!
Ice hockey is a team sport played on ice in which two teams of skaters use sticks to shoot a hard hockey puck into their opponent’s net. Six members of each team skate up and down the ice trying to take the puck and score a goal.
Hockey is difficult to play. You can’t just one day decide to go play hockey, you need to learn how to skate, stick handle, etc, all you need for basketball is a ball and a net.
My favourite team is the Toronto Maple Leafs, but no one in my opinion compares to Pavel Bure. I’m his biggest fan.
Hockey is most popular in areas of North America (particularly Canada and northern parts of the United States) and Europe. In north America, the National Hockey League(NHL) is the highest level for men’s hockey and the most popular. Ice hockey is the official national winter sport of Canada. Worldwide, there are ice hockey federations in 73 countries.

Bolster the Giant Bolster was so big that with step he could travel six miles one from hilltop to hilltop! He lived in Cornwall on the tip of England and terrified the locals, stealing sheep and even eating. One day, though, he fell in love with a young girl called Agnes and asked her to marry him. Agnes didn’t want to, so she tried to think of a way to get rid of him for good. She asked him to do dangerous things to win her love but nothing worked, she had one last idea. She asked him so to fill up a hole in a nearby cliff with his blood. Bolster agreed After all, how much giant’s blood does it take to fill a small hole? The hole, though, led down into the sea. All his blood ran into the sea and that was the end of the evil giant. This is a very popular legend in Cornwall. Locals say you can still see a red stain on the cliffs at Chapel Porth!

Chapel Porth!

A quick-minded explorer.
One night before the sunset a hotel in the center of the city was in fire.
The people who were inside ran out of the building, they stopped near the hotel looking at the fire and talking.
- You know, one of them said to the man who was standing next to him, when I understood we were in fire, I didn’t move and continued to sit in the armchair reading a book for a sometime.
Then I rose and before I came out I ran into some of the rooms.
I was curious about the money.
And indeed, when I was looking for it, I found a lot of paper money in empty rooms.
People didn’t think about money when they are in panic nowadays.
When paper money get into a fire, the fire burns it.
So I took all the paper money that I could find.
No one will be poorer if I took it.
I’m going to use it soon.
I think I shall visit some foreign countries.
- You don’t say so. said the other man.
By the way, don’t you know what I am.
- No, answered the first man.And where
