The Taimyr Peninsula is the most northerly piece of land in the world that is still attached to a continent. It is located in north-central Siberia in Krasnoyarsk region, in Russia. The northernmost point of the peninsula is Cape Chelyuskin. Vilkitsky Strait and Severnaya Zemlya lie to the north of it. The Kara Sea and the Gulf of Yenisei River are stretched to the west of the peninsula; the Laptev Sea and the Gulf of Khatanga are stretched to the east of Taimyr. The Taimyr Peninsula occupies approximately 400 000 km2. In the centre of the peninsula, there are the Byranga Mountains, reaching a height of 500-1125 meters, and the huge Lake Taimyr. The southern border of the peninsula is the northern part of the Putarana Plateau. The most part of Taimyr is covered by low-lying Arctic tundra with permafrost just beneath the surface. The climate is very severe there with long cold winters and short cool summers. The temperature in winter may fall to - 60°C. Winters bring strong ice-blast wind that may become the cause of severe snowstorm. The Polar night lasts for 45 days without sun while the Polar day lasts for 68 days without dark.
The Taimyr is a breeding ground for huge numbers of geese and waders. The red-crop goose is one of the rare birds that live on the territory of Taimyr. Musk ox is another representative of the Taimyr fauna. There are also millions of wild reindeer, large population of Artic fox, ermine and snowy owl. Walruses have historically always come ashore on the Taimyr, but as the sea-ice retreats further north each summer, they appear in even larger numbers. Moreover, there are clearly substantial numbers of polar bears, wolverines and brown bears but very little is known about them. In fact, very little scientific research has been done in Taimyr at all, so there are huge holes in biologists’ knowledge.

What healthy eating really means
We all need certain elements in our food so we can stay healthy. These are carbohydrates, fats, proteins, fiber, minerals, and vitamins and of course, water. Basic elements should be present in all diets. Carbohydrates provide your body with energy and can be called “the body’s fuel”. This fuel is converted into heat. If the body doesn’t get enough carbohydrates it will automatically switch to using protein as fuel, it is bad because protein is used to build and repair body’s tissue.
Ideally, over half your food intake should be carbohydrates.
Fiber too, is an important element in your diet because it adds bulk to food, helping digestion giving you a feeling of fullness. Some of the best sources of fiber are whole grain or slightly milled cereals.

There are 46 universities in Britain.
For all British citizens a place at university brings with it a grant from their Local Education authority. The grants cover tuition fees and some -of the living expenses. The amount depends on the parents’ income. If the parents do not earn much money, their children will receive a full grand (1) which will cover all their expenses.
Most 18 and 19 year-olds in Britain are fairly independent people, and when the time comes to pick a college they usually choose one as far away from home as possible! So, many students in northern and Scottish universities come from the south of England and vice versa. It is very unusual for university students to live at home. Although parents may be a little sad to see this happen, they usually approve of the move, and see it as a necessary part of becoming an adult. Anyway, the three university terms are only ten weeks each, and during vacation times families are reunited.
When they first arrive at college, first year university students are called ’freshers’. A fresher’s life can be exciting but terrifying for the first week.
Often freshers will live in a Hall of Residence on or near the college campus, although they may move out into a rented room (2) in their second or third year, or share a house with friends. Many freshers will feel very homesick for the first week or so. But living in hall soon helps them to make new friends.
During the first week, all the clubs and societies hold a ’freshers’fair’ (3) during which they try to persuade the new students to join their society The freshers are told that it is important for them to come into contact with many opinions and activities during their time at university, but the choice can be a bit overwhelming!
On the day that lectures start, groups of freshers are often seen walking around huge campuses, maps in hand and a worried look on their faces. They are learning how difficult it is to change from a school community to one of many thousands. They also learn a new way of studying. As well as lectures, there are regular seminars, at which one of a small group of students (probably not more than ten) reads a paper he or she has written. The paper is then discussed by the tutor and the rest of the group. Once or twice a term, students will have a tutorial. This means that they see a tutor alone to discuss their work (4) and their progress. In Oxford and Cambridge, and some other universities, the study system is based entirely around such tutorials which take place once a week. Attending lectures is optional for all students.

Water pollution occurs mostly, when people overload the water environment such as streams,
lakes, underground water, bays or seas with wastes or substances harmful to living beings.
Water is necessary for life. All organisms contain it, some drink it and some live in it. Plants and
animals require water that is moderately pure, and they cannot survive, if water contains toxic chemicals
or harmful microorganisms. Water pollution kills large quantity of fish, birds, and other animals, in some
cases killing everything in an affected area.
Pollution makes streams, lakes, and coastal waters unpleasant to swim in or to have a rest. Fish
and shellfish harvested from polluted waters may be unsafe to eat. People who use polluted water can
become ill, if they drink polluted water for a long time, it may develop cancer or hurt their future children.
The major water pollutants are chemical, biological, and physical materials that lessen the water
quality. Pollutants can be separated into several different classes:
The first class is petroleum products: oil, fuel, lubrication, plastics. The petroleum products get
into water by accidental spills from ships, tanker trucks and when there are leaks from underground
storage tanks. Many petroleum products are poisonous for animals. Spilled oil damages the feathers of
birds and the fur of animals, often it causes death.
The second class is pesticides and herbicides. There are chemicals used to kill harmful animals
and plants. If they penetrate into streams, rivers, lakes, these chemicals can be very dangerous. The
chemicals can remain dangerous for a long time. When an animal eats a plant that’s been treated with it,
the poisons are absorbed into the tissues and organs of the animals.
When other animals feed on a contaminated animal, the chemicals are passed up to them. As it
goes up through the food chain, the chemical becomes more harmful, so animals at the top of the food
chains may suffer cancers, reproductive problems, and death. Nitrates can cause a lethal form of
anaemia in infants.
The third class is heavy metals. They get into the water from industries, automobile exhausts,
mines, and natural soil. Heavy metals also become more harmful as they follow the food chain. They
accumulate in living being’s cells and when they reach high levels of concentration in the organism, they
can be extremely poisonous, or can result in long-term health problems. They can sometimes cause liver
and kidney damage.
The fourth class is fertilizers and other nutrients used to promote plant growth on farms and in
gardens.
The fifth class is infectious organisms and pathogens. They enter water through sewage, storm
drains, runoff from farms, etc.
The last one is thermal pollution. Water is often taken from rivers, lakes or seas to be used in
factories and power plants. The water is usually returned to the source warmer than when it was taken.
Even a small temperature change in a body of water can drive away the fish and other species that were
11
originally there, and attract other species in place of them. It breaks a balance and can cause serious
circumstances in future.
