Past Perfect — прошедшее совершенное время, которое обозначает действия, уже закончившегося до определенного момента в прошлом. Данный момент в прошлом может быть точно указан с предлогом времени by или может быть выражен другим прошедшим действием.
Past Perfect правила и примеры

Если кажется, что работу сделать легко, то она, непременно, оказывается сложной. И наоборот – сложные задачи всегда имеют простые решения. Это неписаное правило распространяется и на Past Perfect. Оно не такое сложное, как видится. Первое, что необходимо запомнить – данное время никогда не употребляется самостоятельно. Оно всегда «работает» сплочённо, бок о бок с другим действием в прошлом, и указывает на то, что действие, выраженное им, произошло раньше другого действия или ранее определенного времени. Рассмотрим два примера:


We came to the bus stop and the bus left – Мы пришли на автобусную остановку и автобус ушел. We came to the bus stop, but the bus had left – Мы пришли на автобусную остановку, но автобус ушёл.

Прежде чем употребить ту или иную временную форму, необходимо понять, что произошло в первую очередь, а что во вторую, или два действия произошли одновременно. В первом случае мы успели сесть на нужный нам автобус и используем Past Simple (Простое Прошедшее), т. Е события в этом предложении произошли последовательно одно за другим. Во втором примере мы опоздали и не успели на нужный нам автобус – он уже уехал. Иными словами действие случилось до того, как мы пришли, и поэтому здесь используется форма Past Perfect (Прошедшее Совершенное).
